The major basilicas in Rome include: The Basilica of St. John Lateran, the true seat of the bishop of Rome; The Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the oldest and most important shrines in the world dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary; and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the second largest church in Rome after St. Peter’s Basilica. The basilica houses the tomb of St. Paul under its main altar.
