Rouen is the capital of Normandy. An important city in Roman times and in the Middle Ages, that boasts Gothic churches such as Saint-Maclou and Saint-Ouen, as well as a pedestrianised center with cobbled streets and medieval half-timbered houses. Its magnificent Notre-Dame cathedral has often been depicted by the Impressionist painter Claude Monet.
