What must I declare when returning to the United States?

Declare purchases and other items acquired abroad as required, and keep receipts. A personal duty-free exemption of up to US$800 commonly applies to qualifying returning U.S. residents, subject to conditions such as trip duration and prior use of the exemption. Separate limits and restrictions apply to some goods. Declare food, plants, animal products, and other regulated items, even when you believe they are permitted. Consult CBP for current rules.
